Luxury in Latin America | American Trade Hotel
My stay at The American Trade Hotel was compensated. My views and opinion of the location and accommodation are authentically my own.
Hi babes from Panama 🇵🇦 I am absolutely in love with this beautiful Central American country! Fun fact, Panama was ranked the 4th best country to visit in 2019 by Lonely Planet!
I came here for the first time to celebrate my birthday and little did I know I would quickly fall in love with the food, the culture, and the people who all make the country so vibrant and special.
Hey babes 👋 come with me on vacation to Panama. I’m staying at the #AmericanTradeHotel and sharing the history behind the walls. 🇵🇦 @matadornetwork @dametravelerofficial @smallluxuryhotels @Travel + Leisure #visitpanama #cascoviejo #panamaluxury #travelwriter♬ Latino (Instrumental) - Ultra Beats
Casco Viejo is, in my opinion, an ideal place to stay if you’re visiting for the first time. Here is where you’ll find amazing historic landmarks and tourist attractions. Not to mention great bars, restaurants, shops and nightlife all in one place!
Staying at American Trade Hotel was a no brainer. As it is a remarkable 50 room, 4 floor luxury hotel that has been beautifully restored. The colonial building sits in the heart of a UNESCO World Heritage neighborhood and was once a meeting place for local gangs that ruled the neighborhood as recently as the mid 2000s.
Today I am told that those same former gang members now lead completely new lives, rendering their knowledge to others as tour guides showing off the revitalized neighborhood while sharing its rich history.
Honestly, when I discovered the background of hotel it made me want to stay here even more. I think it’s interesting! When you get into your room, cut the TV on, you are able to watch an informative video that highlights the renovation work done to the hotel and the before and after photos will make your mouth drop! It is awesome to see how gracefully they preserved the history and character of the building while offering modern upgrades.
One step inside of the hotel lobby and you’re greeted with Spanish colonial architecture throughout, paired with vibrant colors and fresh greenery to match!
The graffiti on the walls hold history, the manager of the hotel, shared with me that the words and drawings are original and were used as a way to communicate amongst the gang members who occupied the building before.
I love the ample natural light available through the windows.
The bathroom is stunning! From the beautiful tile, to the marble detail, love it!
I stayed in the Jardin room that sleeps 3, offers a plush king bed, with a stunning garden courtyard! This 792 square foot room doesn’t disappoint.
I remember during my stay I told my mom “It’s so peaceful here, even at night.” Don’t get me wrong, many would be seen out and about during the day but I found it to be less hasty or busy with people in the evening.
Everyone’s experience can differ depending the time of year, activities happening locally, etc.
At the American Trade Hotel there are more than 40 rooms and no two rooms are alike. The rooms range in size, are beautifully equipped with Panamanian furniture designed with reclaimed wood, handwoven coverlets made in Mexico, plush bathrobes and free Wi-Fi throughout.
All rooms come with bath products by Aesop and most rooms come with rain showers.
Prepare to not have to open a door at all during your stay. This door is manned by a lovely person on the hotel staff, who is available to greet you and assist in any way.
I would look forward to seeing the doorman upon leaving and returning. It gave me an opportunity to further practice my Spanish with him too!
How do I get there?
From Tampa (TPA) to Panama City (PTY) by flight you’re looking at around 6h or so, with an average layover time of around 1h.
When flying to Panama there are several airlines to choose from; such as, Copa Airlines, American Airlines, and Spirit Airlines to name a few.
Visitors are welcome to visit Panama, however, non-vaccinated travelers or travelers with less than 2 doses have to present a negative COVID-19 test for entry.
ALL travelers are required to present their completed Electronic Health Affidavit (in physical or digital form) to their airline or carrier BEFORE boarding to Panama. Register and complete your form -> Health Affidavit
I saved time and stress by purchasing an at home test before my trip to Panama and bought extra in case I needed.
Breakfast is delicious! I ordered their pancakes, fresh orange juice, bacon, and fruit. The croissant sandwich is a personal fave.
Check out their menu below, which item would you order? Leave a comment at the end of the blog post to share : D
The Dining Room at American Trade Hotel is beautifully designed and offers fusion cuisine with fresh and local ingredients. The hotel can also accommodate special dietary differences upon request, offering vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options.
The Lobby café and bar is where you will find many, from guests to locals, coming together to meet and greet. The bar has a wide selection of beers, wines, and cocktail menu. You can also snag shareable appetizers any time of the day.
After your amazing dining experience or exploration around Casco Viejo, be sure to enjoy the rooftop pool. It’s modest and well maintained and offers beautiful roof top views of old town. You’re able to see the renovation of the area in real time.
I wanted to share a photo of the rooftop at night, so relaxing.
Care to checkout a good book? You sure can at the hotel! The library is nestled on the 2nd floor one story below the rooftop pool with a lovely courtyard awaiting you beyond the doors.
During my stay I was able to enjoy quiet time here as I read classic books and during the day the room was easily converted to a meeting space for staff, guests, or visitors.
Great use of space and lovely library to behold.
I snapped the above photo on my phone, I just love how the city lights up at night. This was taken just steps away from the hotel, a block or so down the street.
American Trade Hotel has nearby shops, dining, museums, and a convenient store called REY where I was able to grab water and other things similar to what you would find in a grocery store or a gas station in America. REY is literally across the street from the hotel.
Want to take a trip to Panama but don’t want to deal with the hassle of travel planning? I am happy to help and lend my professional expertise and personal experience to ensure that you have an amazing time in Panama as well.
When booking a stay at the American Trade Hotel, I highly suggest reserving in advance as the peak season for Panama is said to be October – February. Keeping in consideration that this is by far the most popular hotel in the city.
Final thoughts ...
As a newer hotel, that just opened in 2013, I am beyond impressed with the attention to the detail, the preservation of the buildings history, the excellent service and staff, the fresh drinks and dining, and the impeccable accommodations. Not to mention the location couldn’t be better, especially for those visiting Panama for the first time. Staying at American Trade Hotel puts you in a fantastic yet central location in town.
The receptionists are curteous with many speaking english paired with expert knowledge of the area. There’s always someone available to help you no matter the task or request.
I personally felt like the hustle and bustle of the city was mostly heard during the day making it easy for me to get a good nights sleep. The one thing I will share is that right next to the hotel is a church bell that rings at the top of every hour or so. It didn’t bother me, but I want to mention it, in case that is something that would be of a nuisance to others.
Getting around is super easy, most of the things to see and do in Casco Viejo are walking distance from the hotel and they have Uber in Panama City so I was able to get rides easily. Traveling to the Canal Zone to the mall and more for less than $20 bucks one way!
The wifi at the hotel is strong, which is a huge plus for my digital nomads or folks who rely on consistent service when traveling for work or leisure.
